Action to tackle the illegal trade in dogs and cats in the EU needed now!

Jacqueline Foster MEP backs calls for an action plan to tackle the illegal trade in dogs and cats in the EU

Members of the European Parliament's Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals received a presentation from the Dogs Trust and the EU Dogs and Cats Alliance at their meeting in Strasbourg on 06 April 2017 on their "Call for an Action Plan to tackle the illegal trade in dogs and cats in the EU."

Commenting following the meeting, Vice-President of the Intergroup, Jacqueline Foster MEP said:

"I strongly back calls for an action plan to tackle the illegal trade in dogs and cats in the EU. Lack of progress in this area is totally unacceptable. There is no excuse for Member States not enforcing existing laws and the European Commission have a clear co-ordination role to play.

"I'd like to see the UK Government ensure paperwork isn't fraudulent, animals are properly chipped and train more sniffer dogs that can trace the illegal import of animals of all species.

"It was excellent to hear from the Dogs Trust and the EU Dog & Cat Alliance on this subject in Strasbourg this morning. As Vice President of the European Parliament's Animal Welfare Intergroup, I'll continue to demand this issue is taken seriously as the illegal trafficking of animals is often the consequence of organised crime."
